Definition
A description of the base materials used to make semiconductor devices such as diodes and transistors. Pure silicon or germanium crystals are deliberately contaminated with tiny, controlled amounts of other elements (impurities) to give them the electrical properties needed to control current flow. Adding impurities with extra electrons creates N-type material; adding impurities with fewer electrons creates P-type material. Combining N-type and P-type materials produces the junctions that make solid-state electronic components work.
Plain English
Silicon and germanium are two materials that, in their pure form, conduct electricity only weakly. By mixing in tiny traces of certain other elements on purpose, engineers change how these materials carry electrical current. The treated material is then used to build the small electronic parts found inside aircraft radios, instruments, and avionics.
Context Anchor
Seen in aircraft electrical and avionics discussions, especially when describing solid-state parts inside radios, regulators, rectifiers, and other electronic equipment.
Derivation
Doped' comes from the everyday sense of adding something to alter a substance. In electronics, doping means adding small amounts of a chosen impurity to a pure crystal to change its electrical behaviour in a controlled way.
Why Pilots Care
Pilots do not usually repair these materials directly, but they are inside many aircraft electrical components. Understanding the term helps when reading about how modern aircraft electronics control, switch, or change electrical power.
Analogy
Think of pure silicon as distilled water — it barely conducts electricity. Adding a pinch of the right impurity is like adding a pinch of salt to the water: a small amount changes how well it carries current.
Intuition Check
Do not read “doped” as damaged, drugged, or carelessly contaminated. Here it means deliberately treated with tiny amounts of another material so its electrical behavior is useful.
Example Sentence 1
The transistors in the radio stack are built from silicon doped with appropriate impurities to form the P-type and N-type regions that control current flow.
Example Sentence 2
Technicians replaced the failed avionics module whose internal circuits relied on germanium doped with appropriate impurities.
