Definition
The southern point where the Earth's axis of rotation meets its surface. It is the fixed reference point at latitude 90° South, used as the southern endpoint for the lines of longitude and as the basis for true (geographic) direction.
Plain English
The exact spot at the bottom of the Earth where the planet's spin axis comes out of the ground. It is the southernmost point on Earth and the reference used to define true south.
Context Anchor
Seen in global navigation, polar chart discussions, and explanations of latitude, longitude, and true direction.
Derivation
Geographic comes from the Greek geo- (earth) and graphein (to write or describe). So 'geographic pole' means the pole as defined by the Earth's actual physical shape and rotation, not by magnetism.
Why Pilots Care
It provides the fixed reference for true direction and latitude in the Southern Hemisphere, unlike the moving magnetic pole.
Intuition Check
Do not assume “South Geographic Pole” means the same thing as “south magnetic pole.” Geographic means a fixed position on the Earth’s map grid; magnetic refers to Earth’s magnetic field.
Example Sentence 1
All lines of longitude converge at the South Geographic Pole, which is why true headings become unreliable in polar regions.
Example Sentence 2
Charts show the South Geographic Pole as the point where all southbound meridians converge.
