Definition
Aviation maintenance work performed by an outside specialist or specialty shop that holds the required ratings, equipment, or expertise to do tasks the primary repair facility is not equipped or certificated to perform. The primary facility remains responsible for the airworthiness of the completed work, but the specialist actually carries out the specialised task — for example, instrument overhaul, propeller balancing, non-destructive testing, or specialised welding.
Plain English
Work that a repair shop sends out to another shop that specialises in that particular job. The main shop is still responsible for the aircraft, but the specialist does the part of the job that needs special skills or equipment.
Context Anchor
You may encounter this term when reading about Flight Service operations, airport advisory areas, or procedures at airports without an operating control tower.
Why Pilots Care
Ensures complex repairs meet regulatory standards and preserves airworthiness.
Intuition Check
Do not assume “specialist-provided” means an expert is controlling your flight. Here it means a Flight Service specialist is providing information and advisories, not clearances.
Example Sentence 1
The repair station sent the attitude indicator out for instrument overhaul as a specialist-provided service.
Example Sentence 2
All specialist-provided services were entered in the aircraft records with the technician's approval number.
