Definition
An FAA-issued pilot certificate that authorizes a person to receive flight instruction and act as pilot in command of an aircraft only under the supervision and endorsements of an authorized flight instructor. It is the entry-level certificate in the FAA pilot certification system and does not, on its own, permit carrying passengers or flying for compensation.
Plain English
It is the official FAA card that lets you start learning to fly. It allows you to fly solo, but only when your instructor has signed you off for the specific aircraft and conditions.
Context Anchor
Seen when learning about pilot certification, training requirements, and the documents a student pilot needs before solo flight.
Derivation
Certificate comes from Latin roots meaning “to make certain” or “to certify.” That helps here because the document is official proof that the FAA recognizes the person as holding student pilot status.
Why Pilots Care
It is the first legal step that allows a trainee to fly solo and continue progressing toward a private pilot certificate.
Intuition Check
Do not read Student certificate as a graduation document or a license to fly anywhere alone. It means you are recognized as a student pilot; solo flying still requires specific instructor approval.
Example Sentence 1
Before her first solo, the applicant had to have a valid student certificate and a current medical in her possession.
Example Sentence 2
After passing the knowledge test, the instructor endorsed the student certificate for cross-country flights.
