Definition
Airspace of defined dimensions identified by an area on the surface of the earth in which activities must be confined because of their nature, or in which limitations are imposed on aircraft operations that are not part of those activities, or both. Common types include Prohibited Areas, Restricted Areas, Warning Areas, Military Operations Areas (MOAs), Alert Areas, and Controlled Firing Areas.
Plain English
A chunk of airspace set aside for activities — usually military — that either need to be kept inside that space, or that other aircraft need to stay clear of, or both.
Context Anchor
Seen during route planning, on aeronautical charts, in instrument procedure planning, and when air traffic control routes an aircraft near military, security, or hazardous activity areas.
Why Pilots Care
Failing to account for active SUA can result in airspace violations, unsafe proximity to military traffic, or last-minute route changes.
Intuition Check
Do not assume all SUA is closed to civilian aircraft. Some SUA is completely off-limits, some may be entered only under certain conditions, and some is mainly a warning to use extra caution.
Example Sentence 1
Before departing, the pilot checked the chart for any active SUA along the planned route and rerouted around a hot Restricted Area.
Example Sentence 2
With the SUA active, ATC issued a reroute to keep the aircraft clear of the restricted military operations area.
