Definition
Subpart I is the section of 14 CFR Part 121 that contains airplane performance operating limitations for transport category aircraft used in air carrier operations, including takeoff, en route, and landing performance requirements such as runway length, climb gradients, and obstacle clearance.
Plain English
Subpart I is the part of the federal aviation rules that tells airline operators how their airplanes must perform on takeoff, in the air, and on landing — for example, how much runway they need and how well they must be able to climb if an engine fails.
Context Anchor
Seen when FAA handbooks or regulations point you to the performance-limit rules that apply to certain commercial or turbine aircraft operations.
Derivation
Federal Aviation Regulations are organized into Parts, and each Part is divided into Subparts labeled with letters (A, B, C, and so on). 'Subpart I' is simply the ninth lettered division within Part 121. Knowing the lettering system helps you find rules quickly when a reference points you to a specific Subpart.
Why Pilots Care
Operators must verify compliance with these limits before every flight to ensure the airplane can safely take off, climb, and land under the given conditions.
Intuition Check
Do not read Subpart I as a stand-alone regulation by itself. It only has meaning inside the specific FAA regulation part being referenced, and the I is a letter label, not the number 1.
Example Sentence 1
The dispatcher confirmed the takeoff weight met the runway length requirements specified in Subpart I before releasing the flight.
Example Sentence 2
During preflight planning the crew reviewed Subpart I to determine the maximum allowable landing weight given the expected temperature and pressure altitude.
