Definition
Solo flights conducted by a student pilot under the active oversight of an authorized flight instructor, who remains on the ground at the airport, monitors the flight, and is available to provide guidance before, during, and after the operation. The instructor retains responsibility for the flight, has endorsed the student for the specific maneuvers and conditions being flown, and observes the student's takeoffs, traffic pattern work, and landings.
Plain English
A solo flight where the student is alone in the aircraft, but the instructor is still actively in charge — watching from the ground, available on the radio if needed, and signing the student off for exactly what is being flown.
Context Anchor
Used during student pilot training after the first solo flight, when the instructor begins allowing additional solo practice under controlled limits.
Derivation
Supervised comes from words meaning “to look over.” Solo comes from a word meaning “alone.” Together, the phrase means the student is alone in the aircraft, while the instructor is still looking over the activity from outside the aircraft.
Why Pilots Care
Builds student confidence and skill under controlled conditions before progressing to fully independent solo flight.
Intuition Check
Do not read “solo” as “on your own with no oversight.” Here, solo means no instructor is on board; supervised means the instructor still controls the plan and limits of the flight.
Example Sentence 1
The student's first three solo trips around the pattern were supervised solo operations, with the instructor watching from the ramp and ready on the radio.
Example Sentence 2
During supervised solo operations the student practiced three full-stop landings while the instructor monitored from the ramp.
