Definition
Having matching, mirror-image halves on either side of a central reference line or point. In flight maneuvers, symmetrical describes a maneuver whose halves mirror each other in shape, timing, altitude change, and bank angle around a midpoint.
Plain English
The two halves look the same, just flipped. What you do on one side, you do as a mirror image on the other side.

Derivation

Why Pilots Care
On a checkride, performance maneuvers are graded partly on symmetry. If the second half of a lazy eight climbs higher, banks more steeply, or takes longer than the first half, the maneuver is not symmetrical and points are lost. Symmetry is also a sign of smooth, coordinated control inputs.
Analogy
Think of drawing a figure eight on paper. If one loop is large and smooth but the other is small and sharp, the figure is not symmetrical.
Intuition Check
Symmetrical does not just mean “neat” or “pretty.” In this context, it means both halves of the lazy eight match each other in the way the airplane moves.
