Definition
Blue lights installed along the edges of a taxiway to mark its lateral boundaries during periods of darkness or reduced visibility. They define the usable taxiway surface so pilots can see where the taxiway ends and the surrounding non-movement area begins.
Plain English
Blue lights running along both sides of a taxiway that show the pilot exactly where the taxiway edges are when it is dark or hard to see.
Context Anchor
You see taxiway edge lights while taxiing at night, in poor visibility, or on unfamiliar airport pavement.
Why Pilots Care
They help prevent runway incursions and ensure the aircraft stays on the correct paved surface during ground movement.
Intuition Check
Do not assume taxiway edge lights show the center of the path. They mark the sides of the taxiway; the pilot still keeps the airplane properly aligned between them.
Example Sentence 1
After landing at night, the pilot followed the blue taxiway edge lights to the parking area.
Example Sentence 2
After landing at night, the crew followed the illuminated taxiway edge lights to reach the assigned parking spot.
