Definition
A short, deliberate spin maneuver in which the airplane is intentionally placed into a spin and held in the developed spin phase for approximately three seconds before recovery is initiated. It is used during spin training to demonstrate spin entry, the developed spin, and standard recovery without prolonging the maneuver beyond what is necessary for the training objective.
Plain English
It is a practice spin where the pilot lets the airplane spin for about three seconds and then recovers. Just long enough to see the spin develop and practice getting out of it.
Context Anchor
Seen in FAA discussions of intentional spins, spin approval, and spin recovery practice.
Why Pilots Care
Practicing short spins builds the ability to recognize and recover promptly, limiting altitude loss and reinforcing safe spin handling.
Intuition Check
A three-second spin does not mean the whole maneuver lasts only three seconds. It means the spin is allowed to continue for three seconds before recovery is started.
Example Sentence 1
During spin training, the instructor demonstrated a three-second spin to the left, then handed over controls for the student to try one.
Example Sentence 2
Chapter 5 uses the three-second spin to illustrate proper spin recovery technique without excessive rotation.
