Definition
A taxilane is the portion of the aircraft parking area used for access between taxiways and aircraft parking positions, hangars, or ramp areas. Unlike taxiways, taxilanes are not under the direct control of air traffic control and pilots are responsible for their own separation from other aircraft and obstacles.
Plain English
A taxilane is the path an aircraft uses to move around the parking area — between the main taxiway and where airplanes park. The pilot is responsible for watching out for other aircraft and obstacles while using it.
Context Anchor
Seen in airport notices, airport diagrams, and ground movement instructions for ramp, hangar, or parking areas.
Derivation
In aviation, “taxi” means to move an aircraft on the ground under its own power. “Lane” means a marked or understood path. Together, “taxilane” means a ground path for aircraft movement, usually inside a parking area.
Why Pilots Care
Following the correct taxilane keeps the aircraft clear of obstacles, other traffic, and restricted areas during ramp operations.
Intuition Check
Do not assume a taxilane is the same as a taxiway. A taxiway is a main aircraft movement route; a taxilane is usually the smaller route through a parking or ramp area.
Example Sentence 1
After exiting the runway and crossing the taxiway, the pilot proceeded slowly down the taxilane to the assigned parking spot.
Example Sentence 2
Airport signage directed the aircraft onto the taxilane after leaving the main taxiway.
