Definition
A NOTAM contraction indicating that a navigational aid, frequency, or facility is not being watched or supervised for proper operation. The facility may still be transmitting, but no one is checking it for malfunctions or signal integrity.
Plain English
The equipment is on, but nobody is watching it to make sure it is working correctly. If it fails or sends out wrong information, no one will know right away.
Context Anchor
Seen in NOTAMs and other airport status information when a facility, light, navigation aid, or service is not being actively monitored.
Derivation
From 'monitor,' which comes from the Latin 'monere' meaning 'to warn' or 'to watch over.' The 'un-' prefix reverses it. So 'unmonitored' literally means 'not watched over' — no one is checking on it.
Why Pilots Care
Pilots cannot assume the aid is operating normally and must verify status before use.
Intuition Check
UNMNT does not automatically mean the item is broken or unusable. It means its condition is not being actively watched, so a failure may not be noticed or reported immediately.
Example Sentence 1
The NOTAM read 'VOR UNMNT,' so the pilot used a different navaid for the approach.
Example Sentence 2
Approach the airport with caution because the runway lights are UNMNT overnight.
