Definition
An ATC phrase used by a controller to request that a pilot confirm the runway or direction in which they intend to take off, or the direction they intend to turn immediately after becoming airborne. It is used when the controller needs to confirm a non-standard departure path, an intersection takeoff direction, or an initial turn that differs from the usual flow of traffic at that airport.
Plain English
ATC is asking the pilot to say back exactly which way they plan to depart, or which way they plan to turn after lifting off. The controller wants to be sure before clearing the takeoff.
Context Anchor
You may hear this from a tower controller before takeoff, especially when the controller needs to know your planned path after leaving the runway.
Derivation
“Verify” comes from older words meaning “to make true” or “confirm as true.” In aviation radio use, it means to check and confirm information clearly, not to guess or assume.
Why Pilots Care
Ensures the aircraft follows the assigned or charted path and avoids traffic, terrain, or restricted airspace.
Intuition Check
Do not treat this as a takeoff clearance or a turn instruction by itself. It is a request to confirm your planned direction after takeoff.
Example Sentence 1
Tower called, "Cessna 24X, verify specific direction of takeoff," and the pilot replied, "Cessna 24X, departing Runway 27."
Example Sentence 2
During the briefing the crew confirmed the specific direction of takeoff or direction of turns after takeoff listed on the departure plate.
