Definition
On a radar display such as ARTS III or DBRITE, the symbol marking the geographic position of a VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) navigation station on the ground. It allows controllers and observers to see where each VOR sits relative to traffic, airways, and airports shown on the same display.
Plain English
It is the spot on the radar screen that shows where a VOR ground station is physically located.
Context Anchor
Seen on radar displays, airport facility displays, and charts that show navigation stations near the aircraft’s route or airport area.
Derivation
VOR stands for VHF Omnidirectional Range, a ground-based navigation station that broadcasts signals in every direction. 'Location' here simply means the point on the chart or radar screen where that station sits.
Why Pilots Care
Enables accurate referencing of navigation aids for position awareness and controller instructions.
Intuition Check
Do not read “VOR location” as the aircraft’s location. It means the location of the VOR ground station being shown as a fixed reference point.
Example Sentence 1
The controller cross-checked the aircraft's position against the nearest VOR location shown on the DBRITE display.
Example Sentence 2
Pilots cross-check their instruments against the known VOR location during vectoring.
