Definition
A visual external inspection of the aircraft performed by the pilot before flight, in which the pilot walks around the aircraft in a set sequence to check the airframe, control surfaces, fluids, tires, antennas, lights, and other components for damage, leaks, security, and proper condition.
Plain English
Before flying, the pilot walks around the outside of the aircraft and looks it over carefully to make sure everything is in good shape and nothing is loose, leaking, or damaged.
Context Anchor
Used before departure, usually as part of the aircraft checklist before engine start or before the aircraft leaves its parking spot.
Why Pilots Care
Identifies discrepancies that could cause loss of control, system failure, or emergency situations once airborne.
Intuition Check
A walk-around is not just a casual look at the airplane. In aviation, it means a deliberate safety inspection before flight.
Example Sentence 1
After loading the bags, the pilot completed a walk-around to confirm the aircraft was ready for departure.
Example Sentence 2
During the walk-around the pilot confirmed the pitot tube cover was removed and the static ports were clear.
