Definition 1 of 2
Definition
A government organization, in the United States the National Weather Service (NWS), that observes, forecasts, and distributes weather information for public, commercial, and aviation use. For aviation, it produces the reports, forecasts, and advisories pilots rely on for flight planning and in-flight decisions, including METARs, TAFs, area forecasts, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, and winds aloft.
Plain English
The official agency that watches the weather, predicts what it will do, and publishes that information for pilots and the public to use.
Context Anchor
Pilots encounter this term when checking weather before a flight, reading aviation weather products, or listening to weather information during a flight.
Derivation
Weather comes from an old English word for the condition of the sky and air. Service comes from a word meaning work done for others. In aviation, Weather Service means the organized provider that supplies weather information to pilots.
Why Pilots Care
Access to accurate weather information is essential for safe route planning and avoiding hazardous conditions.
Intuition Check
Do not read Weather Service as just any weather website or app. In aviation, it usually points to an official or aviation-approved source of weather observations and forecasts.
Example Sentence 1
Before departing, the pilot reviewed the forecasts issued by the Weather Service for both the route and the destination.
Example Sentence 2
Updated information from the weather service allowed the crew to adjust altitude and avoid turbulence.
