Definition
An ATC request directing the pilot to inform the controller of what action the pilot plans to take next. It is used when the controller needs to know the pilot's chosen course of action before issuing further instructions or clearances.
Plain English
ATC is asking, 'Tell me what you want to do.' The controller is handing the next decision to the pilot and waiting for the pilot's plan before doing anything else.
Context Anchor
Heard on the radio when a controller needs to know the pilot’s next plan, especially after a delay, problem, missed approach, route change, or uncertain situation.
Derivation
Advise' comes from the Old French avis, meaning 'opinion' or 'notice given.' In ATC usage, advise simply means 'tell me' or 'let me know.' Pairing it with 'intentions' makes the request specific: tell the controller what you intend to do next.
Why Pilots Care
Allows nearby aircraft and controllers to anticipate movements and maintain safe separation.
Intuition Check
Do not read “advise” as “give advice.” In this phrase, “advise” means “tell me,” so “Advise Intentions” means “tell me your plan.”
Example Sentence 1
After the missed approach, the controller transmitted, 'Cessna 32A, advise intentions.'
Example Sentence 2
Another aircraft on the common frequency asked everyone in the pattern to advise intentions before entering the downwind.
