Definition
Airway facilities (AF) are the ground-based equipment, systems, and infrastructure that support the safe and efficient operation of aircraft along the National Airspace System's airways. This includes navigation aids (such as VORs and NDBs), communication equipment, radar systems, and the facilities that house and maintain them.
Plain English
All the equipment on the ground that helps airplanes navigate and stay in contact while flying along established routes — the radio beacons, antennas, radar sites, and the buildings that hold them.
Context Anchor
Seen in FAA abbreviation lists and in operational notices when a navigation or communication facility connected with an airway is being discussed.
Derivation
Airway' refers to a designated route in the sky used by aircraft. 'Facilities' refers to the physical equipment and structures that provide a service. Put together, the term simply means the ground equipment that serves the airways.
Why Pilots Care
When an airway facility is out of service, it can affect available navigation routes, approaches, or communication coverage. Pilots check NOTAMs for AF status before flight to know what's working and what isn't.
Intuition Check
Do not read “airway” here as a breathing passage or “facilities” as buildings for public use. In this aviation use, airway facilities are support systems that help aircraft use air routes.
Example Sentence 1
The NOTAM reported that several airway facilities along the route were temporarily out of service due to scheduled maintenance.
Example Sentence 2
A facility outage listed under AF affected several navigation aids along the route.
