Definition
A dedicated, long-distance telephone system operated by the U.S. Department of Defense for official military communications. In the aviation context, AUTOVON numbers are sometimes listed alongside commercial numbers for military air traffic facilities, base operations, and weather services, allowing authorized military users to reach those facilities over the DoD network rather than the public phone system.
Plain English
A separate phone system used by the U.S. military. Some military aviation facilities list an AUTOVON number for military callers in addition to a regular phone number for everyone else.
Context Anchor
Seen in acronym lists, older flight planning references, military aviation documents, and contact information connected with military operations.
Derivation
AUTOVON is built from 'Automatic' and 'Voice Network' — automatic meaning the call connects through the system without an operator, and voice network meaning a phone (rather than data or teletype) system. The 'Auto-' prefix distinguished it from the older operator-assisted military phone systems it replaced.
Why Pilots Care
Civilian pilots cannot use AUTOVON numbers. If you are flying into or coordinating with a military field, you need the commercial number. Recognizing what AUTOVON means prevents wasted time trying to dial a number that isn't available to you.
Intuition Check
Do not read AUTOVON as an automatic voice warning system in the aircraft. Here it means a Department of Defense telephone network for voice calls.
Example Sentence 1
The base operations listing showed both a commercial number and an AUTOVON number, but as a civilian pilot I dialed the commercial line.
Example Sentence 2
Older flight publications sometimes referenced AUTOVON circuits for long-distance military coordination.
