Definition
An authorization placed on a pilot certificate that specifies the broad group of aircraft (category) and the more specific subgroup within it (class) that the pilot is qualified to operate. Category refers to a broad classification such as airplane, rotorcraft, glider, or lighter-than-air. Class refers to a narrower grouping within a category based on operating characteristics, such as single-engine land, multi-engine land, single-engine sea, or multi-engine sea within the airplane category.
Plain English
It is the part of your pilot certificate that says what kind of aircraft you are allowed to fly. The category is the big group (like airplane), and the class is the smaller group inside it (like single-engine land).
Context Anchor
Seen when discussing sport pilot privileges, certificate limitations, and what type of aircraft a sport pilot may fly.
Derivation
Category comes from the Greek katēgoria, meaning a general grouping or classification. Class comes from the Latin classis, meaning a division or group. Together they describe a two-level system: the broad group, and the more specific group inside it.
Why Pilots Care
It sets the legal boundary on the aircraft you may operate without needing further training or an endorsement.
Intuition Check
A category/class rating is not a score, grade, or opinion of skill. Here, rating means an official FAA authorization showing which kind of aircraft you may operate.
Example Sentence 1
Her certificate listed an airplane single-engine land category/class rating, so she could not act as pilot in command of a multi-engine airplane until she added that class rating.
Example Sentence 2
Before flying the new aircraft the pilot verified that their category/class rating covered the make and model on the rental agreement.
