Definition
An ICAO term for controlled airspace extending upward from a specified height above the surface of the earth.
Plain English
A block of controlled airspace that begins at some altitude above the ground and extends upward. It does not start at the surface — there is uncontrolled or differently controlled air below it.
Context Anchor
Seen in ICAO airspace definitions, charts, and discussions of controlled airspace structure.
Derivation
ICAO stands for the International Civil Aviation Organization, the United Nations body that sets worldwide aviation standards. A 'control area' under ICAO rules is simply an area of airspace under air traffic control — the term predates the U.S. lettered class system and is still used internationally.
Why Pilots Care
Pilots must obtain ATC clearance and follow instructions while inside a control area to maintain safe separation from other traffic.
Intuition Check
Do not read “control area” as any place where the pilot controls the airplane. In this context, it means a defined block of airspace managed by air traffic control, starting above a specified lower limit.
Example Sentence 1
When flying in Europe, the pilot reviewed the chart to confirm the lower limit of the control area along the route.
Example Sentence 2
All IFR traffic inside the control area is subject to continuous ATC instructions.
