Definition
An air traffic controller, working from a radar position in a Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility, who is responsible for separating and sequencing aircraft departing from one or more airports during the climb phase, until the aircraft is handed off to the next controller (typically a center controller) for the en route portion of the flight.
Plain English
The controller who watches departing aircraft on radar and gives them headings, altitudes, and clearances after takeoff, until they are high enough and far enough away to be passed on to the next controller.
Context Anchor
Commonly heard during instrument departures when the tower instructs the pilot to change radio frequency and contact departure control.
Derivation
Departure means leaving a place. Controller comes from control, meaning to direct or manage. Together, the term points to the controller who manages aircraft as they leave the airport area.
Why Pilots Care
Provides safe separation from other traffic and terrain while establishing the aircraft on its assigned route during the busiest and most critical phase of flight.
Intuition Check
Do not think of the departure controller as the person who approves the takeoff. The tower normally handles takeoff clearance; the departure controller usually takes over after the aircraft is airborne.
Example Sentence 1
After takeoff, the tower instructed us to contact departure controller on 125.5, who then turned us on course and cleared us to climb to 8,000 feet.
Example Sentence 2
The departure controller assigned a climb to 4,000 feet and advised of traffic crossing from left to right.
