Definition
A defined area on the ground onto which parachutists, cargo, or other objects are intentionally released from an aircraft in flight. Drop zones are established and published for parachute operations and may be charted or identified by NOTAM, with associated airspace activity that other pilots are expected to avoid.
Plain English
A specific patch of ground that has been set aside as the target for parachute jumps or items dropped from an aircraft.
Context Anchor
You may see this term in flight notices, chart notes, airport information, or air traffic control calls about parachute jumping near your route or airport.
Derivation
Plain English compound. 'Drop' meaning to release from above, and 'zone' from the Greek 'zone' meaning a belt or defined area. Together they describe a marked patch of ground designated to receive whatever is being released from the air.
Why Pilots Care
Awareness prevents mid-air conflicts with descending parachutists or low-flying drop aircraft and ensures compliance with temporary airspace restrictions.
Intuition Check
A Drop Zone is not just any place where something could be dropped. In FAA use, it means a planned landing area for parachute jumpers or parachute-delivered objects.
Example Sentence 1
The sectional chart showed a parachute drop zone two miles north of our route, so we requested a small deviation to remain clear.
Example Sentence 2
Before takeoff the instructor reviewed the active drop zone five miles north of the airport so the student would know where to expect descending parachutes.
