Definition
The end of a holding pattern that contains the holding fix. It is the point where the inbound leg terminates and the aircraft begins its outbound turn. The holding fix is the navigation reference (such as a VOR, NDB, intersection, or waypoint) around which the holding pattern is built.
Plain English
It's the end of the racetrack-shaped holding pattern that sits over the navigation point you're holding at. Each time around the pattern, the aircraft passes this point, then turns to fly the outbound leg.
Context Anchor
Used when learning or describing the shape of a standard holding pattern, especially the relationship between the holding fix, the inbound leg, and the outbound turn.
Derivation
Called the 'fix end' because it is the end of the holding pattern that contains the holding fix — the fixed navigation point the pattern is anchored to. The other end of the pattern is called the 'outbound end.'
Why Pilots Care
When flying a hold, timing and turns are referenced from crossing the holding fix at the fix end. Knowing which end is which keeps your inbound leg, outbound leg, and turn timing correct.
Intuition Check
Do not read fix as repair, and do not read fix end as the end of the holding procedure. Here, it means the end of the pattern located at the navigation fix.
Example Sentence 1
After crossing the holding fix at the fix end, the pilot turned outbound and started the one-minute timer.
Example Sentence 2
Timing for the holding pattern starts when the aircraft reaches the fix end.
