Definition
A service provided by Air Traffic Control for the purpose of giving pilots useful information related to the safe and efficient conduct of a flight, such as weather updates, traffic advisories, runway and airport conditions, navigation aid status, and other operational information. It is advisory in nature and does not include separation services or formal control instructions.
Plain English
It is a service where ATC passes along helpful information you need during your flight. They are not telling you what to do or keeping you separated from other aircraft -- they are just giving you useful updates so you can make good decisions.
Context Anchor
A pilot may encounter this term in FAA guidance, when using flight service resources, or when receiving information before or during a flight.
Why Pilots Care
Keeps pilots informed of changing conditions and hazards so they can maintain safety and comply with regulations.
Intuition Check
Do not read “service” here as a command or clearance service. Flight Information Service provides useful information and advice; it does not give you authority to proceed or take over responsibility for the flight.
Example Sentence 1
While cruising en route, the controller used Flight Information Service to advise us of moderate turbulence reported by an aircraft 20 miles ahead.
Example Sentence 2
Before departure the student pilot used Flight Information Service to check for any runway or airspace notices.
