Definition
Waypoints in an RNAV procedure that require the aircraft to pass directly over the waypoint before beginning the turn to the next leg. The turn is initiated only after the waypoint is crossed, resulting in a wider, overshooting turn path.
Plain English
A point on the route that you must fly all the way to and over the top of before you start turning toward the next point.
Context Anchor
Seen on published arrival procedures, route charts, and aircraft navigation displays when a specific point must be crossed before turning.
Why Pilots Care
Using the correct type ensures the aircraft follows the published track for obstacle clearance and meets any altitude or speed restrictions at that point.
Intuition Check
Fly over does not just mean passing somewhere near the point. Here it means crossing the waypoint before starting the turn.
Example Sentence 1
Because the missed approach point is a fly-over waypoint, we held heading until we crossed it before starting the climbing turn.
Example Sentence 2
The procedure requires flying over the waypoint to stay on the published path.
