Definition
FAA-certificated instructors authorized to provide ground training — the classroom and theoretical portion of pilot education — covering subjects such as regulations, weather, navigation, aerodynamics, and aircraft systems. Ground instructor certificates are issued in three ratings: Basic, Advanced, and Instrument. Ground instructors do not provide flight training in an aircraft.
Plain English
Instructors certified by the FAA to teach the on-the-ground knowledge a pilot needs, such as rules, weather, and how aircraft systems work. They teach in classrooms or one-on-one, but they do not give lessons in the airplane.
Context Anchor
Seen in FAA training and certification discussions when describing who may teach aviation knowledge and who may provide required sign-offs for student pilots.
Derivation
"Ground" here means "not in the air" — training conducted on the ground rather than in flight. The term distinguishes this role from a flight instructor, who teaches in the aircraft.
Why Pilots Care
A student may complete much of their required knowledge training with a ground instructor before or alongside flight lessons. Knowing the difference helps a pilot understand who is qualified to sign off which type of training and endorsement.
Intuition Check
Do not assume “ground instructors” means anyone who explains flying while standing on the ground. In FAA use, it means instructors who hold an FAA ground instructor certificate and have specific teaching and sign-off privileges.
Example Sentence 1
She studied weather and regulations with a ground instructor before starting flight lessons with a CFI.
Example Sentence 2
Ground instructors often deliver the required ground training that prepares applicants for the knowledge exam.
