Definition
Pilots flying toward an airport with the intention of landing there, as distinguished from pilots departing the airport or transiting nearby airspace.
Plain English
Pilots who are heading to the airport to land.
Context Anchor
Used in airport traffic pattern discussions, radio calls, and arrival planning near an airport.
Derivation
‘Inbound’ comes from ‘in’ plus ‘bound,’ where ‘bound’ here means ‘heading toward a destination’ (same sense as ‘homeward bound’). So an inbound pilot is one heading toward the airport, the opposite of outbound (heading away).
Why Pilots Care
Recognizing inbound pilots allows everyone in the area to maintain proper separation and follow traffic pattern rules safely.
Intuition Check
Inbound does not necessarily mean already in the traffic pattern. It means headed toward the airport or pattern area.
Example Sentence 1
Inbound pilots should monitor the common traffic advisory frequency at least 10 miles out and announce their position before entering the pattern.
Example Sentence 2
The controller sequenced the inbound pilots by altitude and arrival direction.
