Definition
The fix that identifies the beginning of the intermediate segment of an instrument approach procedure. The intermediate segment lies between the initial approach fix (IAF) and the final approach fix (FAF), and is where the aircraft is aligned and configured for the final approach.
Plain English
A specific point on an instrument approach where the middle portion of the approach begins. By this point the aircraft has finished maneuvering to get lined up, and is now getting ready for the final descent to the runway.
Context Anchor
Seen on instrument approach charts and in approach clearances when following a published approach path.
Derivation
"Intermediate" comes from Latin intermedius, meaning "in the middle." The name reflects its position: between the initial part of the approach (where the aircraft is still maneuvering inbound) and the final part (the descent to the runway).
Why Pilots Care
It marks where the aircraft must be properly configured, on speed, and aligned for the final descent.
Intuition Check
Do not read “fix” as something being repaired. In aviation navigation, a fix is a known point in space. Do not read “intermediate” as a skill level. Here it means the middle part of the approach path.
Example Sentence 1
After crossing the IAF, the pilot descended to the published altitude and continued inbound to the intermediate fix.
Example Sentence 2
After passing the intermediate fix, the pilot began reducing speed and extending flaps for landing.
