Definition
The highest Mach number at which an airplane is certified to be operated in normal flight. Mach number is the airplane's speed expressed as a fraction of the local speed of sound, so MMO sets the upper limit on how close to the speed of sound the airplane may be flown. Exceeding MMO can lead to compressibility effects, control difficulties, and structural concerns. At higher altitudes, where the speed of sound is lower, MMO typically becomes the limiting speed instead of VMO (the maximum operating airspeed in knots).
Plain English
The fastest speed, expressed as a fraction of the speed of sound, at which the airplane is allowed to fly in normal operations. Go faster than this and the airplane starts running into problems caused by air behaving differently as it nears the speed of sound.
Context Anchor
Seen in airplane limitations, high-altitude operations, speed margin discussions, and cockpit Mach indications.
Derivation
Mach is named after Ernst Mach, a 19th-century Austrian physicist who studied how objects behave as they approach the speed of sound. A Mach number of 0.80 means the airplane is moving at 80% of the local speed of sound. The 'MO' stands for 'maximum operating,' meaning the certified upper limit for normal flight.
Why Pilots Care
Staying below MMO prevents control difficulties and potential damage from compressibility effects at high speeds.
Analogy
MMO is like a speed limit sign, but the limit is based on how fast the airplane is moving compared with sound, not just how many miles or knots per hour it is traveling.
Grounding Statement
At higher altitudes, pilots may need to watch Mach number closely because the airplane can approach its Mach limit even when the indicated airspeed does not look unusually high.
Intuition Check
MMO is not a target cruise speed. It is a maximum allowed limit that the pilot must stay below.
Example Sentence 1
As they climbed into the mid-thirties, the crew watched the Mach indicator approach MMO and reduced thrust to hold cruise Mach.
Example Sentence 2
Manufacturer data specifies an MMO of 0.82 for this model to maintain safe handling qualities.
