Definition
A learned ability to perform a coordinated physical action smoothly and accurately, using the muscles and the senses together. Motor skills are developed through practice and feedback, and they progress from slow, deliberate movements to fast, automatic ones as the learner gains experience.
Plain English
A physical action you have learned to do well by practicing it. At first you have to think hard about every movement, but with repetition the action becomes smooth and almost automatic.
Context Anchor
Used in instructor training when discussing how students learn the physical actions needed to fly an aircraft.
Derivation
‘Motor’ comes from the Latin movere, meaning ‘to move,’ and refers here to muscle movement, not engines. ‘Skill’ means a learned ability. So a motor-skill is a learned movement ability.
Why Pilots Care
Safe handling of the aircraft in all phases of flight depends on well-developed motor-skills that become automatic through practice.
Intuition Check
Do not read “motor” here as the aircraft’s engine. In this context, “motor” means body movement and physical coordination.
Example Sentence 1
Landing an airplane is a motor-skill that improves with practice and consistent feedback from the instructor.
Example Sentence 2
Instructors focus on motor-skills during pattern work so the pilot can land smoothly without over-controlling.
