Definition
In FAA documents and the Pilot/Controller Glossary, a Note is a statement that adds explanatory information to a procedure, rule, or definition. It is informational only — it does not contain a requirement, a limitation, or a prohibition. Mandatory content is conveyed elsewhere in the regulation or procedure itself.
Plain English
A Note is extra information added to help you understand something. It explains or clarifies, but it does not tell you that you must do something or must not do something.
Context Anchor
Seen throughout FAA handbooks, the AIM, charts, procedures, and glossary entries where extra explanation is needed.
Derivation
From Latin 'nota', meaning a mark or sign used to draw attention. In FAA writing it keeps that original sense — a marker that points out helpful information without changing the rule itself.
Why Pilots Care
Lets pilots quickly separate routine explanatory text from critical safety instructions labeled as Caution or Warning.
Intuition Check
Do not treat a note as casual or unimportant just because the word sounds informal. In FAA material, a note is placed there to clarify something the reader is expected to notice.
Example Sentence 1
The approach plate showed a Note reminding pilots that the runway lights are pilot-controlled at night.
Example Sentence 2
After the procedure, a note explained that the reported times were based on standard temperature and pressure.
