Definition
The connectors that join flexible oil hoses to the oil cooler, allowing engine oil to flow into the cooler to lose heat and then return to the engine. Each fitting forms a sealed, pressure-tight connection between the hose and the cooler's inlet or outlet port.
Plain English
The screw-on connectors where the rubber oil lines attach to the oil cooler. They keep the hot, pressurized oil sealed in as it flows through the cooler.
Context Anchor
Seen during a preflight inspection when checking the engine area for leaks, loose parts, or damaged hoses.
Why Pilots Care
Loose or damaged fittings can allow oil to leak, resulting in low oil pressure and potential engine failure.
Intuition Check
Do not read “fittings” as general equipment or accessories here. Here, “fittings” means the actual connection hardware where the oil hoses attach.
Example Sentence 1
During preflight, the pilot checked the oil cooler hose fittings for any signs of seepage or loose connections.
Example Sentence 2
The mechanic replaced the cracked oil cooler hose fittings before the next flight.
