Definition
A structured assessment, conducted by an instructor at the end of a lesson or training segment, in which the student demonstrates the procedures and maneuvers introduced during instruction so the instructor can measure progress against the lesson's stated objectives and completion standards.
Plain English
It is the part of a lesson where the instructor watches the student perform what was taught and judges how well it was done compared to the standard set for that lesson.
Context Anchor
Seen in flight and ground lesson plans, especially near the end of a lesson where the instructor decides whether the learner has met the planned goal.
Derivation
From Latin 'performare' (to carry out fully) and 'evaluare' (to determine the value of). Together they describe the act of judging how well something was carried out — which is exactly what the instructor does at the end of a lesson.
Why Pilots Care
Identifies skill gaps early so training stays safe and efficient.
Intuition Check
Do not read performance evaluation as just a grade or opinion. In this context, it means checking the learner’s actual ability against a stated lesson standard.
Example Sentence 1
After the dual instruction phase, the instructor moved into the performance evaluation and asked the student to fly two solo patterns to the published standard.
Example Sentence 2
Regular performance evaluations showed the student was ready to practice solo cross-country flights.
