Definition
An aircraft system that supplies the air pressure information needed by the airspeed indicator, altimeter, and vertical speed indicator. It uses a pitot tube to capture ram (impact) air pressure from the aircraft's forward motion and one or more static ports to sense the still, ambient air pressure outside the aircraft. The instruments compare these two pressures to display airspeed, altitude, and rate of climb or descent.
Plain English
A system of small openings on the outside of the airplane that feed air pressure to three flight instruments. One opening faces forward and senses the pressure of air being pushed into it as the airplane flies; the other openings sit flush with the side of the airplane and sense the surrounding air pressure. Together, these readings let the instruments show how fast you're going, how high you are, and whether you're climbing or descending.
Context Anchor
Seen during systems study, preflight inspection, instrument checks, and anti-icing or deicing discussions because ice can block the pressure openings.
Derivation
Named after Henri Pitot, an 18th-century French engineer who invented the pitot tube to measure the speed of flowing water. 'Static' comes from the Latin staticus, meaning 'standing still' -- referring to the undisturbed ambient air pressure the static ports sense, as opposed to the ram pressure caught by the pitot tube.
Why Pilots Care
Blockage or icing in this system can cause false airspeed or altitude readings, leading to loss of control or terrain collision if not recognized.
Grounding Statement
Picture small openings on the airplane taking in air pressure information; if those openings are blocked, the instruments fed by them may no longer tell the truth.
Intuition Check
“Static” does not mean radio noise or electrical charge here. It means outside air pressure that is not being rammed directly into the airplane by forward motion.
Example Sentence 1
During preflight, the pilot confirmed the pitot-static system was clear by checking the pitot tube cover was removed and the static ports were unobstructed.
Example Sentence 2
In icing conditions the pilot activated the pitot-static system heaters to keep the instruments accurate.
