Definition
The official document, produced by the aircraft manufacturer and approved (in part) by the FAA, that contains all the operating limitations, performance data, normal and emergency procedures, weight and balance information, and systems descriptions specific to a particular aircraft. The Airplane Flight Manual (AFM) is the FAA-approved portion required to be carried in the aircraft; the Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) is the manufacturer's expanded version that includes the AFM material plus additional operational guidance. For most modern general aviation aircraft, the POH and AFM are combined into a single document, which is why the two terms are often written together as POH/AFM.
Plain English
The aircraft's own manual. It tells you how to operate that specific airplane safely — what speeds to use, what limits not to exceed, how to handle emergencies, and how the systems work. Every airplane has one, and it's specific to that make, model, and serial number.
Context Anchor
Seen when learning the correct speeds, power settings, procedures, and limits for the airplane you are flying, including during instrument training and basic flight maneuvers.
Derivation
"Handbook" and "manual" both indicate a reference document. The distinction between the two names is regulatory: the AFM is the FAA-approved document required by regulation, while the POH is the manufacturer's broader publication built around it. The combined name reflects that, in practice, most aircraft now ship with one document that serves both roles.
Why Pilots Care
Operating outside the published POH/AFM limitations or procedures can result in loss of control, structural damage, or regulatory violation.
Analogy
It is similar to an owner's manual for a car, but more important: parts of it define legal and safety limits for operating the airplane.
Intuition Check
Do not treat POH/AFM as a general flying textbook. It is the operating reference for a specific airplane, and its numbers and limits may not match another airplane, even one that looks similar.
Example Sentence 1
Before her first flight in the new Cessna, she spent an evening with the POH/AFM to learn the airspeeds, fuel system, and emergency procedures.
Example Sentence 2
During the preflight briefing the instructor pointed out the emergency engine failure procedure in the AFM.
