Definition
A part of a route. Each end of a route segment is identified by a continental or insular geographical location, or by a point at which a definite radio fix can be established.
Plain English
One named piece of a flight route, running from one identified point to the next. The points at each end are real, identifiable places — either a geographic location or a spot you can pin down with a radio navigation fix.
Context Anchor
Seen in route descriptions, air traffic clearances, charts, and flight planning when a longer route is divided into smaller parts.
Derivation
Segment comes from the Latin segmentum, meaning a piece cut off. So a route segment is literally a cut-off piece of the whole route — one leg of it.
Why Pilots Care
Accurate route segments support precise navigation, fuel calculations, terrain clearance, and compliance with ATC instructions.
Intuition Check
A route segment is not the whole route. It is the specific stretch between two defined navigation points.
Example Sentence 1
The first route segment took them from the departure fix to the next VOR before they turned on course.
Example Sentence 2
ATC cleared the flight direct on the next route segment after the waypoint.
