Definition
A group of visual illusions experienced on approach and landing in which the runway's width, slope, or surrounding terrain causes the pilot to misjudge height above the ground, distance from the runway, or the correct glidepath. Common examples include narrower-than-usual runways making the aircraft appear higher than it is, wider runways making it appear lower, upsloping runways or terrain making it appear higher, and downsloping runways or terrain making it appear lower.
Plain English
Tricks of the eye during landing where the runway's shape, width, or slope makes the pilot think they are higher or lower than they really are.
Context Anchor
Encountered on final approach and landing, especially at unfamiliar airports, at night, over featureless terrain, or when the runway is unusually wide, narrow, uphill, or downhill.
Derivation
"Illusion" comes from the Latin illudere, meaning "to mock" or "to deceive." The runway itself is not changing — the pilot's perception of it is being deceived by visual cues that differ from what they are used to.
Why Pilots Care
These illusions can cause pilots to flare too high or too low, resulting in hard landings, bounced landings, or runway excursions.
Analogy
It is like seeing a road in the distance that looks flat, then realizing it is actually climbing or dropping. Your eyes gave you a picture, but the picture did not match the real shape of the path.
Grounding Statement
A runway illusion happens when the runway picture looks normal enough to trust, but it is quietly giving the pilot the wrong sense of height, distance, or descent angle.
Intuition Check
Do not think “illusion” means the runway is imaginary. Here it means a real runway is being seen in a misleading way.
Example Sentence 1
Briefing the approach into the short, narrow mountain strip, the instructor reminded the student that runway illusions could make them think they were higher than they really were.
Example Sentence 2
A narrow runway often produces runway illusions that cause pilots to flare too late and touch down long.
