Definition
A standard holding pattern flown with wind correction applied so that the racetrack-shaped ground track matches the standard pattern (right turns, one-minute inbound leg at or below 14,000 feet MSL) despite wind drift. The pilot adjusts heading on the outbound leg to compensate for crosswind drift, and adjusts outbound timing to produce a one-minute inbound leg, keeping the actual flight path over the ground close to the intended pattern.
Plain English
A holding pattern flown in real wind. The pilot crabs into the wind on the outbound leg and changes how long they fly outbound so that the inbound leg back to the fix takes one minute, keeping the loop close to its intended shape over the ground.
Context Anchor
Used during instrument holding, when ATC assigns a hold or when a pilot practices holding procedures in instrument training.
Derivation
Standard comes from an older word meaning a fixed mark or accepted example. In aviation, it does not mean “best” or “perfect”; it means the default procedure used unless something else is stated. Holding means keeping the aircraft in a specified area while waiting.
Why Pilots Care
Maintains the aircraft within protected airspace and ensures proper sequencing and timing at the fix.
Analogy
Think of walking a racetrack pattern on a moving sidewalk. If the sidewalk pushes you sideways, you have to aim slightly into the movement and adjust your path so you still end up where you intended.
Grounding Statement
In a holding pattern with wind, the airplane may be pointed one way while its actual path over the ground is being pushed another way, so the pilot must correct for that push.
Intuition Check
Standard does not mean the pattern will look perfect or equal on both sides in the wind. Here, standard means the default right-turn hold; with wind, the pilot must adjust heading and timing to make the path over the ground work.
Example Sentence 1
With a strong crosswind from the west, she crabbed about 15 degrees into the wind on the outbound leg to keep the standard holding pattern's ground track aligned with the inbound course.
Example Sentence 2
By shortening the outbound leg slightly, the pilot maintained exactly one minute on the inbound leg of the standard holding pattern with wind.
