Definition
In the 5P checklist used in Single-Pilot Resource Management (SRM), 'the Pilot' is the first of the five P's and refers to an honest self-assessment of the pilot's own fitness to fly at that moment. It covers physical readiness, mental state, recent flight experience, currency, proficiency, fatigue, illness, stress, medications, and emotional condition.
Plain English
It means stopping to ask, 'Am I actually fit to fly this flight, right now?' before committing to it. You're checking your own body, mind, recent practice, and stress level the same way you'd check the airplane.
Context Anchor
Used during single-pilot risk management before the flight and again at key points during the flight, especially when conditions or workload change.
Derivation
Pilot comes through French and Italian from older words meaning a person who steers or guides a ship. That helps here because the aviation pilot is not just someone at the controls; the pilot is the person guiding the whole flight safely.
Why Pilots Care
Overlooking personal condition is a leading contributor to general aviation accidents in single-pilot operations.
Intuition Check
Do not read “the Pilot” as just a job title. In the 5P Check, it means the pilot’s fitness and readiness for this specific flight.
Example Sentence 1
When she reached the 'Pilot' step of her 5P check, she realized she had slept poorly and decided to delay the flight by two hours.
Example Sentence 2
The Pilot considered the effects of a cold and medication before accepting the trip.
