Definition
An FAA-issued medical certificate confirming that a pilot meets the basic health standards required to exercise the privileges of a private, recreational, or student pilot. It is the lowest of the three medical classes and is required for non-commercial flying that is not covered by sport pilot or BasicMed rules.
Plain English
A health clearance from an FAA-approved doctor saying you are fit enough to fly as a private or student pilot. It is the simplest of the three medical levels.
Context Anchor
You will see this term when reading about eligibility to act as a student, recreational, or private pilot, especially before solo flight or before exercising pilot privileges.
Derivation
‘Third-class’ here means the third tier in a ranked system, not third in quality. The FAA uses first-, second-, and third-class to mark how strict the medical standards are, with first-class being the most demanding (for airline transport pilots) and third-class the least.
Why Pilots Care
It is the entry-level clearance that permits recreational and many private pilots to act as pilot in command.
Intuition Check
Do not read “third-class” as “poor” or “inferior.” Here it means the FAA medical certificate class used for many non-commercial pilot privileges.
Example Sentence 1
Before her first solo, the student pilot scheduled an exam with an Aviation Medical Examiner to obtain her third-class medical certificate.
Example Sentence 2
Recreational pilots must hold a valid third-class medical certificate to exercise the privileges of their certificate.
