Definition
An abbreviation used on aircraft drawings, schematics, and maintenance documents to indicate that a noted dimension, fastener, callout, or feature is representative of all similar features in the same view, without each one being individually labeled.
Plain English
It means 'this is the same everywhere it appears here.' If a drawing labels one rivet spacing as 'TYP,' it's telling you all the other matching rivets follow the same spacing, even though they're not individually marked.
Context Anchor
Seen on aircraft maintenance drawings, structural repair diagrams, parts illustrations, and service instructions.
Derivation
Short for 'typical,' from the Greek typos meaning 'mark, model, or pattern.' On a drawing, the labeled feature is the pattern; everything similar follows it.
Why Pilots Care
Prevents misinterpretation of diagrams that could lead to incorrect maintenance or inspection actions.
Intuition Check
Typ does not mean “just an example” in a technical drawing. It usually means “apply this same information to all similar items shown.”
Example Sentence 1
The drawing shows one rivet hole dimensioned with the note '0.125 in. TYP,' meaning every rivet hole in that row uses the same diameter.
Example Sentence 2
All similar access panels use the same latch typ unless noted otherwise.
