Definition
In the context of an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), the operator is the person who is directly responsible for, and is the final authority over, the operation of the unmanned aircraft. This may be the person manipulating the controls, or the person supervising the flight when control is shared or automated.
Plain English
The person in charge of flying the drone. They are the one who carries responsibility for the flight, even if someone else is physically working the controls.
Context Anchor
Seen in UAS rules, airspace authorization requests, safety reporting, and discussions of who is responsible for a drone operation.
Derivation
Operator comes from a Latin root meaning “to work” or “to perform.” In aviation, it points to who is carrying out or causing the operation, not just who owns the equipment.
Why Pilots Care
The UAS operator is the single point of accountability for collision avoidance, airspace compliance, and safe integration with manned traffic.
Intuition Check
Do not assume operator always means the person holding the controller. In FAA use, it can mean the person or organization responsible for causing or authorizing the UAS operation.
Example Sentence 1
The UAS operator is responsible for ensuring the flight stays within visual line of sight at all times.
Example Sentence 2
Before takeoff, the UAS operator checked the weather and filed a NOTAM for the operation.
