Definition
An aircraft that is operated without a pilot on board, together with all the equipment needed to control it from a remote location. The system includes the aircraft itself, the control station used by the operator, the communication link between them, and any associated support equipment required for flight.
Plain English
A flying machine with no pilot inside, plus everything on the ground used to fly it — the controller, the radio link, and the supporting gear. The aircraft and the ground equipment together make up the system.
Context Anchor
Seen in regulations, airspace discussions, airport operations, and traffic notices involving drones or remotely operated aircraft.
Derivation
The word 'unmanned' simply means 'without a person on board.' The term is called a 'system' because the aircraft on its own cannot fly — it only works as part of a package that includes the ground controller and the link between them. Calling it a system rather than just an aircraft makes that point clear.
Why Pilots Care
Manned pilots must recognize UAS operations to maintain safe separation and comply with shared airspace rules.
Intuition Check
Do not read “Unmanned Aircraft System” as just the flying aircraft. In aviation use, it means the aircraft plus the equipment and connection used to control it.
Example Sentence 1
The operator checked the control link and battery levels before launching the unmanned aircraft system.
Example Sentence 2
FAA rules require registration of any Unmanned Aircraft System weighing more than 0.55 pounds before flight.
