Definition
An aircraft that operates without a pilot or any other person physically on board. It is controlled either remotely by an operator on the ground or autonomously by an onboard computer system following pre-programmed instructions.
Plain English
An aircraft that flies with nobody inside it. Someone on the ground flies it by remote control, or it flies itself using a built-in computer.
Context Anchor
Seen in discussions of drone operations, airspace rules, airport procedures, and traffic avoidance.
Derivation
Uncrewed' is the modern replacement for 'unmanned.' 'Crew' comes from the Old French creue, meaning 'increase' or 'reinforcement,' and came to mean the people who operate a vessel or aircraft. 'Un-' simply means 'not.' So 'uncrewed' literally means 'without operating personnel on board' — a more accurate and inclusive term than 'unmanned.'
Why Pilots Care
Pilots must recognize these aircraft to maintain separation and comply with shared airspace rules.
Intuition Check
Uncrewed does not mean uncontrolled. It means no person is on board; someone may still be controlling it from the ground or it may be following programmed instructions.
Example Sentence 1
The pilot checked the NOTAMs and noted an active area for uncrewed aircraft operations along the planned route.
Example Sentence 2
Current regulations require remote pilots to yield right of way to manned aircraft.
