Definition
An aircraft operated without a pilot on board, together with all the equipment needed to fly and control it. The system includes the aircraft itself, the ground-based control station, the command-and-control link between them, and any required support equipment such as launch and recovery gear.
Plain English
A flying machine with no one on board, plus everything on the ground that lets a remote operator fly it safely.
Context Anchor
Seen in drone operations, FAA rules for remote pilots, airspace authorization, and discussions about aircraft that share the airspace without a person on board.
Derivation
Uncrewed replaces the older term unmanned. It uses the prefix un- (not) with crewed (having a crew on board). The shift to uncrewed reflects a move toward gender-neutral language while keeping the same operational meaning.
Why Pilots Care
Pilots must understand UAS operations to avoid conflicts in shared airspace and comply with FAA integration rules.
Intuition Check
Uncrewed does not mean “no pilot involved.” It means no person is riding inside the aircraft; a remote pilot or automated control may still be involved.
Example Sentence 1
The survey company operates an uncrewed aircraft system to map pipelines from low altitude.
Example Sentence 2
Regulations require specific training before operating an Uncrewed Aircraft System in controlled airspace.
