A condition of the atmosphere in which a parcel of air, when displaced upward or downward, tends to return to its original level rather than continue moving on its own. Vertically stable air resists vertical motion and is associated with smooth flying conditions, stratiform clouds, steady precipitation, and poor visibility from trapped haze and smoke.
