Definition
The U.S. Department of the Interior is the federal executive department responsible for managing most federally owned public lands and natural resources, including national parks, wildlife refuges, Bureau of Land Management areas, and Indian reservations. In an aviation context, the DOI appears in NOTAMs, charts, and special-use airspace references because flights over or near these lands often carry minimum altitude requests, wildlife protection notices, or operational restrictions.
Plain English
DOI is the U.S. government department in charge of public lands like national parks, wildlife refuges, and other federally protected areas. Pilots see it referenced when flying near those areas because there are often special altitude or noise requests in place.
Context Anchor
Seen in FAA acronym lists and in aviation notices or operational text that identify the government agency involved.
Derivation
‘Interior’ comes from the Latin interior, meaning ‘inner’ or ‘inside.’ When the department was created in 1849, ‘interior’ referred to the internal affairs of the country — its lands, resources, and territories — as distinct from foreign affairs. That older sense of the word is why a department about parks and public lands is called ‘Interior.’
Why Pilots Care
Many DOI-managed areas — especially national parks and wildlife refuges — request or require pilots to maintain at least 2,000 feet AGL to reduce noise and protect wildlife. Knowing a NOTAM or chart note refers to DOI lands helps the pilot recognize why an altitude advisory is in place and comply with it.
Intuition Check
‘Interior’ here does not mean ‘inside a building’ or ‘indoor.’ It refers to the country’s internal lands and natural resources — parks, refuges, and public land — not interiors in the everyday sense.
Example Sentence 1
The NOTAM noted that the route passed over DOI-managed wilderness, so the pilot planned to stay at least 2,000 feet above the surface.
Example Sentence 2
The pilot checked DOI rules before planning a flight over protected federal land.
