Definition
A method of training in which a qualified instructor directs the lesson, presents the material, demonstrates procedures, and guides the student through each task, as distinct from self-study, computer-based training, or independent practice.
Plain English
Training where a teacher is actively running the lesson rather than the student working through it on their own.
Context Anchor
Seen in pre-solo training when the handbook describes learning activities that happen under the direct guidance of a flight instructor.
Why Pilots Care
Some training tasks—especially pre-solo maneuvers and emergency procedures—must be instructor-led because a student cannot safely or legally learn them alone. Knowing which parts of the syllabus require an instructor present helps the student plan training time and avoid assuming self-study can substitute.
Intuition Check
Instructor-led does not mean the instructor does all the work. It means the instructor guides the training while the student learns, practices, and takes on more responsibility as skill improves.
Example Sentence 1
All pre-solo flight maneuvers are instructor-led until the student demonstrates the proficiency required to fly them alone.
Example Sentence 2
Pre-solo maneuvers were practiced in an instructor-led format to maintain consistent standards.
