Definition
An approach lighting system installed at the runway threshold that provides a shortened configuration of steady-burning white lights along the extended runway centerline, combined with a set of sequenced flashing strobe lights (Runway Alignment Indicator Lights, or RAIL) that lead the pilot toward the runway during an instrument approach. SSALR is one of several standard FAA approach lighting configurations and is associated with specific instrument approach minima.
Plain English
